For the most part, the transfer market gives football fans something to fill the void in the summer months. It is always interesting to see what players are linked with your club and who will be let go before the start of the season.
Premier League teams look to be set to splash the cash this transfer market in a bid to remain competitive at both end of the table. Everton have been one of the teams to up their game in the recruitment process by spending a club record £95m so far this summer with still a few weeks before the 2017/18 season is underway.
Amongst Everton’s summer signing is now ex-Man Utd captain Wayne Rooney as he re-joins his old club. Jordan Pickford, Davy Klaassen and Michael Keane have also been brought into the side racking up the majority of Everton’s expenditure this summer.
Most of these signings look like they will be funded by the departure of Romelu Lukaku. Lukaku has been linked with a move away from Goodison Park after he refused a new deal earlier in the year. Chelsea looked to be favourites to get the Belgian’s signature, however much to the dismay of Antonio Conte, Manchester United look to have swept in to sign Lukaku with the striker having undergone a medical with The Reds.
Antonio Conte is not the only one with his head in his hands over this news. Someone is in for a bit of a tough conversation at The Herald Newspaper in Ireland today. Despite the fact that Lukaku is not yet a Manchester United player, the Paper ran with the headline ‘Lukaku is Ready For Work’. Unfortunately, someone at the The Herald made a huge mistake by featuring a picture of grime artist Stormzy in Manchester United gear rather than the Belgian striker with the caption ‘New Manchester United Signing Romelu Lukaku.’ – How this made it to print without anyone picking up on it is another question.
In other transfer news, Chelsea look set to swoop in on ex-Manchester United target Alvaro Morata. The player is likely to be brought in as a replacement for Diego Costa who appears to be set for a return to Atletico Madrid this summer.
Man Utd are aiming to beat Chelsea to another of their transfer targets after agreeing a £35m fee for Monaco star Tiemoue Bakayoko, according to the Daily Star. After the Lukaku scenario, United will have doubts as to whether they will be able to bring in Matic from Chelsea.
Reports suggest that Arsenal have had bids of £30m and £40m turned down for forward Thomas Lemar who impressed at Monaco last season. Arsenal are now preparing a third bid to get the 21 year-olds signature. The Gunners have already made one attacking signing in Lacazette this summer.
There is sure to be plenty more action in the transfer market in the coming weeks.
